Johnny Clegg

One of South Africa’s most revered and respected musicians

Johnny Clegg is an iconic South African singer, songwriter, dancer, activist, anthropologist and academic. He was honoured as a French knight by the French government and in 2015 he became a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE). 2018 is the second consecutive year that Johnny Clegg has been nominated for an Ubuntu Award.

Whilst all of these accolades are fitting, none of them can accurately describe the energetic, passionate human being is one of South Africa's greatest musical exports.

He campaigned against the injustices of apartheid South Africa and has been instrumental in putting the new South Africa on the map as a cultural ambassador. Clegg recently embarked on his Final Journey Tour to bid farewell to millions of loving fans across the globe.

John Kani

Legendary actor, director and playwright

John Kani, affectionately known as the “grandfather of South African theatre” has had an illustrious career spanning over 50 years as a distinguished actor, playwright and director both locally and internationally.

Despite the odds being stacked against young black thespians during the apartheid era, Kani’s voice soared with stories that inspired hope, epitomising the spirit of Ubuntu in the darkest times.

John Kani stars in the much-anticipated Marvel Film, Black Panther, which is due to be released in February 2018. Kani also recently played the king of the Wakanda nation in the 2017 Hollywood blockbuster movie, Captain America: Civil War.

Kani’s long list of accolades are testament to his unwavering contribution to theatre and film. One of John Kani’s greatest legacies is the Market Theatre Laboratory which he co-founded with Barney Simon to give young actors a firm grounding in theatre training.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo

Internationally acclaimed and celebrated male choral group

Four-time Grammy Winner’s, Ladysmith Black Mambazo are the most prolific South Africa recording artists of all time. Formed almost 60 years ago in 1960, the group have performed on the most prestigious stages and have collaborated with highly distinguished international artists such as Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton and Josh Groban.

Singing in the vocal styles of isicathamiya and mbude, they have taken their unique and inspiring sound across the globe.  With songs that speak of Peace, love, injustice and poverty the group have been instrumental in exposing millions across the world to the beautiful sounds of South Africa.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo have been nominated for two Grammy Awards ahead of the 2018 ceremony in two categories, Best World Music for 'Shaka Zulu Revisited: 30th Anniversary Celebration' and Best Children's Album for 'Songs Of Peace & Love For Kids & Parents Around The World'.

Siba Mtongana

Award winning food enthusiast and celebrity chef

As the first African culinary star to have a global reach of over 130 countries in Africa, America, the United Kingdom and Europe through her show with Food Network, Siba’s Table, Siba Mtongana continues to break industry barriers through her passion for food and people. In the USA alone, the show airs in over 60 million homes on the Cooking Channel – another first for a South African chef.

In 2017 she won 3 international awards: Two at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in China and another for Best International Food Show Woman for Siba's Table. Siba has been interviewed on CNN International for her global influence in food and her work with Rise Against Hunger. In addition to 4 local awards, Siba’s cookbook went on to become the best-selling cookbook in the history of Woolworth’s cookbook sales.

Siba is passionate about contributing to further research and development in world food industries and has worked with global causes including Rise Against Hunger as Global Impact Ambassador to raise awareness of issues of world hunger.

Soweto Gospel Choir

Internationally acclaimed South African gospel group

The 43-strong choir has mesmerised and captivated audiences from every corner of the globe sharing the joy of faith through music.

The Choir was formed in 2002 to celebrate the unique and inspirational power of African Gospel music. They rose to fame at the speed of light when their first album “Voices of Heaven” was recorded in December 2002. Within 3 weeks of its release, the album reached the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s World Music Chart.

Boasting two Grammy Awards and multiple nominations, an Emmy Award, three SA Music Awards, and having performed at the Oscars, the group is one of the world’s best choir’s and a true South African treasure.

Laduma Ngxokolo is one of Africa's finest knitwear designers and innovator of the Xhosa inspired knitwear brand MAXHOSA BY LADUMA. The brand, established in 2011 has taken the global fashion world by storm with its colourful and masterful designs.

Ngxokolo has received numerous prestigious awards and captures the hearts of many fashion lovers from South Africa, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Oslo, Berlin and New York. 2018 is the second year that this talented young designer has been nominated for an Ubuntu award.

Ngxokolo is an agent of change, shifting and evolving with the changing times and further engaging in dialogue that pushes Xhosa culture to the future.
